Dr. Emir Değirmenli
Luthier and Physics Engineer Emir Değirmenli was born in 1981 in Kırklareli. After completing his primary and secondary education in Ankara, he entered the Department of Physics Engineering at Hacettepe University in 1998. He took his first steps in instrument making by completing his first oud in 2003. He continued making instruments while studying physics, which enabled him to observe the relationship between these two areas. In 2004, he graduated from university as a physics engineer. In the same year, he established his own workshop and continued to study the physics of musical instruments while constructing the oud. In 2011, he was a founding member of Gazi University Turkish Music Conservatory. Degirmenli has earned his Master’s degree in 2014 and PhD in 2018. He is currently a lecturer at Ankara Hacı Bayram Veli University Turkish Music State Conservatory. He lectures about the physics of sound and the acoustics of the musical instruments. He continues his academic activities and is working on establishing the first musical acoustics laboratory in Turkey.
